Settlement Reached After Young Girl Suffers Permanent Injuries In Drowning Incident

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A $4.2 million settlement was secured for the family of a young girl, who suffered permanent brain damage after nearly drowning at a Monroe pool in 2022.

The incident occurred at the Monroe Aquatics and Fitness Center in Union County on June 9, 2022.

A five-year-old girl was with her family at the pool when she nearly drowned after being underwater for an unknown amount of time. She was rescued but sustained permanent brain damage and lives with significant disabilities, officials said.

A public hearing was held in Union County on Monday and a verdict was reached for the settlement.

“This case is a stark reminder of the importance of safety and vigilance in public spaces, especially where children are involved,” the family’s attorney Larry Serbin said.”Our goal was to secure the best possible outcome for this young girl and her family, and we are grateful that we could achieve a settlement that will help provide for her long-term care and support.

“The family has shown immense strength and resilience throughout this process, and we hope this resolution brings them some measure of relief and security.”

The settlement will help provide adequate resources for the young girl and her family as they navigate any challenges ahead.
