Learning Linguistic History At The Alphabet Museum
UNION COUNTY – The Alphabet Museum is one of a kind. Many residents have found something special in the southwestern corner of Union County. There’s plenty of history inside the walls of this museum. The Alphabet Museum hosts a program called JAARS or Jungle Aviation and Relay Service. JAARS is a missions organization that supports Bible translation and literacy through transportation and training.
The Alphabet Museum is one of a kind. Founded by William Townsend in Peru in 1948, jars set up a home base just south of Waxhaw. Just over a decade later, with support from Billy Graham and the Belk family, who donated
the 200 acres of land they still use today. Scripts, letters and numbers from thousands of languages are represented in the Alphabet Museum, which was built in but many artifacts are centuries old, like this six foot long handwritten scroll of the Torah from the 1800s. The museum has several attractions that make it a unique experience of Union County.
