LANCASTER, SC — In a letter sent to school board members Tuesday, Superintendent Gene Moore announced he will retire on July 31, 2017.
Moore, a Lancaster native, has served as superintendent for the Lancaster County School District since July 2006.
“Coming back to serve as the superintendent of the county where I grew up has been the highlight of my career,” Dr. Moore said. “I have had great support from the board, our teachers and staff and the community. The people of our district are so committed to helping children be successful in school.”
Below is a copy of the email that Dr. Moore sent to his staff Wednesday expressing his intent.
“In June 2006, I was fortunate to be asked by the Board of Trustees to be superintendent of our school district.
In those 11 years, I’ve been very impressed by the smart, dedicated people who work here. You care so much about your students, you work so hard to do great things for children, and you believe in supporting each other – in work and as friends.
I’ve been so fortunate to work with a school board that really puts children first in every decision it makes, a board that supports schools and teachers and works hard to provide the resources we need to help children.
And I’ve also been very impressed by the people and leaders of our county, the energy they put into supporting schools and creating opportunities inside and outside school for youth – leadership programs and homework centers and scholarships and sports activities and spiritual programs and school supplies and basic family needs.
You know I grew up in Lancaster County, and I was afraid the old saying, “You can’t go home again,” might be true, but my time here has been so good – for me personally and professionally and for my family.
Now it’s time for someone else to lead the district. I’ve officially let the board know I plan to retire in July.
I wanted to let you know before it’s made public because the media may publish the announcement this afternoon.
We still have important work to do with AdvancED accreditation, and we have lots to do with the bond projects as they move forward.
Thank you for all the support you’ve given me and for all you do for our children.
Have a great second semester.”
