Β CHARLOTTE, NC — Wednesday hundreds of athletes will compete in the Special Olympics of Mecklenburg County. Β Tuesday, athletes, their families, and volunteers gathered in east Charlotte for opening ceremonies. Β The kick off is like a big party at Bojangles Coliseum. Β Kids get to meet other athletes, and shake hands with Charlotte mascots. Β Organizers say there’s a lot of planning that goes into the four-day event.
“So I think we’re going to get a good showing for our athletes,” said organizer Greg Morrill. Β “They deserve the recognition, to show how hard they’ve worked. Β So we’re looking forward to having the community come out.”
Wednesday, Charlotte Country Day School will host the Special Olympics track and field meet. Β The softball teams will also square off.
