It’s been nearly a month, but it isn’t over yet. In fact, the FBI investigation into ex-Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon is only expanding. The county has been subpoenaed in the corruption case. Cannon’s own lawyers don’t even know how big the case is, since the feds are still following up on leads they’ve been getting since the affidavit came down last month. So is it time to give up?
Will Kennedy told us during the News @ 10, the FBI is still building the criminal case, likely working to find anyone else who should be charged. And to see whether more charges against Cannon could surface. Investigators have plenty already. The next grand jury meets on May 13, but it’s not like they’re on a schedule to charge him.
Officially, there’s not much more to know at this point. But unofficially, you just know people are putting the squeeze on, Law and Order style. Cooperate with us finding other people, and we’ll see what we can do, is what they always say. So after a month of dealing with this, if you were Patrick Cannon, would you go for a plea deal, or demand your day in court?
