UPDATE: An official with Piedmont Natural Gas says crews were making routine repairs when a sink hole developed along Providence Road at High Ridge. The repair work was not the cause of the sink hole, according to engineers called out to survey the area, but steps were taken to ensure the safety of motorists and residents nearby.
PNG officials say they are committed to safety and that the natural gas systems in the area are safe.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Officials with the NC Department of Transportation and Piedmont Natural Gas say one lane of Providence Road will be closed this afternoon for repairs.
The closure will happen on Providence at High Ridge Road, and will affect the right northbound lane. Natural gas crews say they are looking for and repairing a structure failure below the sidewalk that could possibly affect the nearby travel lanes.
Officials say there is no estimate for how long the lane will be closed, but crews will begin repairs as soon as the failure is located and reopen the lane when completed.
Drivers may want to consider an alternate route to avoid any delays.
