CHARLOTTE, NC — CMPD was ordered by a North Carolina judge Monday to release video of a fatal 2012 officer involved shooting.
The video shows the killing of 28-year-old Michael Laney back in 2012. Laney, an alleged armed robbery suspect, got into a scuffle with Officer Anthony Holzhauer and reached for a gun, according to detectives. That’s when investigators say Holzhauer discharged his service weapon and killed Laney.
Officials say both family and police have given conflicting accounts on what happened in that shooting.
Family members maintain that the incident was unnecessary, but prosecutors say Holzhauer was justified in the shooting.
This is the second time this month that a judge has ordered CMPD to release video of an officer involved shooting under a new state law. The other video showed the June 2016 shooting of Rodney Rodriguez, but that video has not yet been released.
