Deputies: Man Arrested After Shooting At First Responders And Stealing Vehicle

ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. – The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man after he fired shots at EMS personnel while he was impaired in a vehicle, according to a news release.

The release states that on August 18, Rowan County emergency services responded to a call of an unresponsive person on Highway 152. Paramedics say they arrived on the scene and found the driver, Miguel Ramirez, likely impaired rather than suffering from a medical condition.

Ramirez fired a shot at the paramedics, injuring one, and proceeded to steel a fire department pickup truck, as said in the release.

Deputies say Ramirez proceeded to drive erratically, resulting in colliding with another vehicle a the intersection of Hwy 152 and Unity Church Road, but drove off-road across a soybean field and into a nearby yard. He was apprehended in the yard by deputies.

Ramirez sustained minor injuries and the driver of the other vehicle was unharmed and the injured paramedic was treated and released from the hospital. It was revealed that the firearm was stolen when it was recovered by a Sheriff’s Office K9

Ramirez was charged with:

  • Two counts of assault on a firefighter/specified medical personnel with a firearm (felony)
  • Felony larceny of a motor vheicle
  • Possession of a stolen firearm
  • Driving while impaired
