Common Market Opening Monroe Road Location

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Common Market has announced plans to open a new location called Common Market OakWold.

The new 6,500 square foot facility, located at 4420A, Monroe Road, will have a 1,300 square foot covered patio and features of the other Common Markets including a full deli, coffee, beer, wine and retail items. The owners say the new store will also have a U-shaped bar and expanded kitchen.

“With the displacement of the South End store, we began to consider the possibilities of relocating into another neighborhood. Driving on Monroe everyday moving children to school, the thought of Oakhurst popped into our heads. We dug around that neighborhood and it felt so right!” said Blake Barnes. “The fact that this location is within a block of where Commonwealth Ave. dead ends into Monroe Road only added to the attraction of that neighborhood.” Barnes, founder of the Plaza Midwood store, continued “There are a lot of people who grew up with me in Plaza Midwood but have moved down the road as their families have expanded, so familiarity will not be an issue. We look forward to being a part of that wonderful neighborhood!”

The name OakWold is a combination of the two neighborhoods, in which, the new location will be situated, Oakhurst and Cotswold.

“We wanted to help provide a place for the surrounding neighborhoods to gather as we felt there was that sense of community emerging in the area.” said Chuck Barger, owner of The Common Market. “In the past couple of years, we have run into so many people in our stores from the area who stress how great the area is and how they would embrace a Common Market. We took on that feedback and decided to move forward as CM OakWold is committed to grow with the ever-changing community.”

The owners saw an opportunity to further expand their reach in the community and be a part of the burgeoning Monroe Road Corridor.

“We felt the neighborhood was a perfect fit for who we are and we want to extend a partnership with the neighborhood just like our other locations. The Common Market team intends to fully work with the local residents to hear what they want from the OakWold store.” said partner Graham Worth. “As Blake has said, we create 80% of the store and let the neighborhood do the rest. They instill the sense of community we strive to accommodate, so their influence is taken very seriously.”

Common Market OakWold is expected to open in the Spring of 2017.
