UNCC Students Speak Out After Recent Spike In Crime At Off-Campus Apartments

CHARLOTTE, NC — Some UNC Charlotte students are concerned about rising crime at their off-campus apartments.

Students who live at The Flats at Mallard Creek met with CMPD officers Monday night about three armed robberies and two carjacking that all happened within the past week.

Last Monday, a student was carjacked in the Flats parking lot. Police chased the suspect who eventually crashed on Harris Blvd and Hickory Grove Road. One man was taken into custody following that incident.

Then early Tuesday morning, two more students were held up in the same parking lot. That also ended in a chase and a SWAT call-out on nearby Wittersham Drive. Four men were arrested in that case.

The latest carjacking took place early Sunday morning when a UNC Charlotte football player told police that he was held up on Education Way.  No arrests have been made in that case.

The Flats management has hired a 24-hour security guard, according to students to live there.
