Deputies Arrest Wesley Chapel Carjacking Suspect

WESLEY CHAPEL, NC — Union County deputies have arrested the suspect accused of trying to steal a truck Tuesday afternoon.

Officials say Brandon Smith, 41, was arrested Wednesday morning near Matthews after a suspicious person report. Smith attempted to run from deputies, but was quickly apprehended. Officials say he faces a charge of Felony Larceny of a Motor Vehicle.

According to reports, Smith tried to steal a man’s truck from a Walgreen’s parking lot Tuesday. While attempting to drive off, the owner ran out from the store and jumped in the truck. Deputies say Smith ran into several other cars in the parking lot while struggling with the truck’s owner, and eventually took off from the truck on foot into some nearby woods off of Antioch Church Road.

While responding to the incident, deputies say they also located Joshua Grimland, 40, of Concord and Angelia Miller, 46, of Charlotte who were broken down on the shoulder of Antioch Church Road. According to deputies, Smith was a passenger with the pair and had gone for help after they broke down.

Officials say that Grimland was wanted on outstanding warrants from another jurisdiction, and a K9 sniff and search found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in Miller’s possession. Both suspects were arrested, and Miller was charged with Felony Possession of Methamphetamines and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
