CHARLOTTE – Crews have closed a section of N.C. 127 at First Ave. NE in Hickory due to a 12-foot sinkhole that has formed in the roadway.
Engineers are on site, assessing what work will be needed in order to prepare an emergency repair contract, which will expedite opening the road.
The closure is expected to remain in place until repairs are completed. The following detour is in place for motorists:
N.C. 127 South: Follow to Second Ave. NE. Turn left to Main Ave. NE, which turns into Eighth St. NE. Turn left to Seventh Ave. NE and follow to Lenoir Rhyne Blvd. Turn right to First Ave. NE back to N.C. 127.
N.C. 127 North: Turn right to Second Ave. NE, then turn left on Lenoir Rhyne Blvd. Follow to Seventh Ave. NE and turn left. Turn left to Eighth St. NE, which turns into Main Ave. NE. Follow to Second Ave. SE, then turn right to Third Ave. NE. Stay left to remain on Third Ave., then turn right to N.C. 127 North.
Transportation officials remind motorists to drive safely, obey all posted speed limits, detour signs and work-zone postings.
