One Dead, Four Injured In Catawba County Crash

CONOVER, N.C. – One person died and four others were injured from a car crash in Catawba County on Friday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

It happened near Conover, North Carolina just before 11:30 p.m. on Highland Avenue NE at Fairgrove Church Road.

Officials said a 2013 Hyundai Sonata, traveling south on Fairgrove Church Road, ran a red light and struck a 2015 Dodge Ram truck heading east on Highland Avenue NE.

The Hyundai driver, 24-year-old Mauricio Gomez, died at the scene. A female passenger and a child in the vehicle were transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Dodge driver, 44-year-old James Walker, and a juvenile passenger were also transported with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies said impairment was not a contributing factor in the collision.

No charges will be filed, the highway patrol said.
