HUDSON, N.C. – A man was killed and his wife was seriously injured after colliding with an alleged drunk driver in Caldwell County on Saturday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
It happened around 3 p.m. on Hickory Nut Ridge Road near Baton Church Road.
Roy Epps, 58, was driving a golf cart with his wife, Julie, 57, and attempted to make a turn onto a private driveway when they were pulled into the path of a Chevy sedan.
Roy was transported by medical helicopter to a hospital in Winston-Salem where he died from his injuries. Julie was transported to Atrium CMC in Charlotte with life-threatening injuries, the highway patrol said.
The Chevy driver, 33-year-old Cody Pennell, was not injured in the crash.
The preliminary investigation found that Pennell was impaired during the crash, troopers said. He has been charged with driving while impaired. Additional charges are pending upon further investigation, the patrol said.
