CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials say an inmate attempted to escape the Mecklenburg County Jail in Uptown Charlotte.
Investigators say 38-year-old Darryl Young was missing from his assigned cell and the jail was immediately placed on lockdown just before 10:30pm on April 23rd.
A short time later, the inmate was taken into custody. Investigators say Young gained access to a maintenance closet that was left unsecured. The closet provided access to other floors which allowed the inmate to escape from his pod, according to a news release.
Young was incarcerated on the following charges: attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, burglary, kidnapping, breaking and entering to terrorize, injury to personal property and several other charges.
He is now facing a misdemeanor charge for trying to escape. A records search shows that Young has been arrested 17 times since 2014 in Mecklenburg County.
