Community Remembers Fallen Firefighter One Year Later

PINEVILLE, NC — This weekend marks one year since a volunteer Pineville firefighter died in the line of duty. The community will come together to remember Richard Sheltra. He collapsed while fighting a fire at a golf equipment store.

There is a 5k, 10k, and a one-mile walk in Sheltra’s honor Saturday at Belle Johnston Community Center. Tonight, the Pineville Fire Chief says he’s seen an outpouring of support from the community over the past year.

“We have had nothing but continuous support,” said Chief Micheal Gerin. “This is just one instance of where the community has supported us. They have been there for us since the very beginning and they just continue to be there for us.”

The opening ceremony is at 7:15am. People can still register before the run.

The Richard Sheltra Memorial Foundation will use the proceeds to buy turnout gear, and pay educational expenses for first responders.
