More Than 40 Monkeys Escape From South Carolina Research Facility
YEMASSEE, SC — Dozens of monkeys are on the loose in South Carolina. Police say 43 monkeys escaped from their enclosures at an Alpha Genesis Research Facility in Beaufort County Wednesday.
Specifically, the monkeys are Rhesus macaques.
Officials say they have been located– and are now working on recapturing them.
The monkeys are young females — weighing around six or seven pounds each.
The research center says none of them have been used in testing– and are too young to carry disease.
