CMPD: Man Charged In Overnight Armed Robbery Accidentally Shot Himself While Fleeing Scene

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police have charged an 18-year-old man with the armed robbery of a northeast Charlotte business overnight.

Lavarius Patterson is charged with robbing a Kangaroo Express on N. Tryon Street at E. Mallard Creek Church Road around 2:15am. Police say Patterson robbed the store at gunpoint and took off on foot.

According to a report, a witness told responding officers that a gunshot was heard in the direction that Patterson ran and then he was seen limping away.

Police say they found Patterson a short time later when staff at CMC-Mercy contacted them about a person matching the robbery suspect’s description arrived with a gunshot wound to the leg. Investigators learned that Patterson had accidentally shot himself while running from the scene.

Patterson has been charged with Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon.
