Polar plunge deepens across Carolinas
The Queen City will struggle to clear the 40s through the first half of the workweek.
Sunny skies and southwesterly winds have shepherded temperatures back into the 50s for most across the Piedmont and Foothills this Sunday afternoon, but our recent taste of winter turns into a four-course meal to start the workweek. Expect lows to dip back into the teens and 20s across the board as we wake up on Monday on the backside of a cold front pushing through the Carolinas. Temperatures will do their best to recover in the afternoon, but the Queen City will fail to get out of the 40s for the first time since Friday. Monday night looks interesting – some limited energy and moisture could lead to a few flurries in the NC Piedmont. Don’t expect any meaningful accumulation outside of the mountains, but any flakes in Charlotte would break a nearly three-year-long snow-free streak. Regardless of whether or not we see any wintry weather, Tuesday night will likely be our coldest since mid-January, with single digits in the mountains and teens in the Foothills and Piedmont.
Temperatures steadily recover heading into Wednesday as highs top out near 50º in the Metro, followed by even warmer air on Thursday. Outside of the flurry chance Monday night, precipitation chances remain near 0% for the next seven days. Another dry cold front shuts the door on any prolonged warm-up by the end of the week. Next weekend looks cold and dry with highs returning to the 30s and 40s.
