Frigid Friday, warming into weekend

Significant rain chances arrive by the start of next week.

Happy Friday! Lows are in the teens and 20s this morning as the coldest air the Carolinas have seen since mid-January kicks off the final day of the workweek. Don’t expect temperatures to make a rousing recovery this Friday afternoon as highs struggle to clear the 20s and 30s across the board. Another bitterly cold night leads us into the weekend as lows again fall into the teens and 20s Saturday morning. Temperatures take a step in a warmer direction Saturday afternoon as highs rise into the 40s and 50s with abundant sunshine. More tolerable air finally arrives by the end of the weekend after southwesterly winds re-establish themselves across the Carolinas – expect temperatures to rise into the 50s and 60s across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area Sunday afternoon.

Big changes arrive by the start of the workweek after a sunny weekend. A budding area of low pressure will develop in the Gulf by Sunday morning, picking up moisture and energy as it sweeps westward. Widespread showers and even a few rumbles of thunder may roll into the Carolinas before sunrise Monday morning. Off-and-on rain may linger into Tuesday before a sharp cold front arrives by Wednesday. We may need to watch for a low-end severe threat Wednesday afternoon. Rain totals will likely end up between 1-2″ across our area in the Monday-Wednesday timeframe. After another round of Arctic air on Thursday, temperatures look to quickly recover by the following weekend.
