Warmth & wetness lie ahead
Most communities across the WCCB Charlotte viewing area will see 1-2" of rain Monday through Wednesday.
Abundant sunshine is sailing over the Carolinas for our first full weekend of December, but temperatures are struggling to get out of the 30s and 40s this Saturday afternoon. The good news for those suffering through this cold snap is that highs in the Piedmont and Foothills will soar back into the 60s on Sunday as southwesterly winds return to the WCCB Charlotte viewing area. While the warmth will stick around as we roll into the workweek, the sunshine will not. Clouds begin to build into our area as soon as Sunday afternoon as a budding area of low pressure pushes into the Southeast. Incoming Gulf moisture will bring showers into the Carolinas overnight Sunday into Monday. There’s some disagreement among short-range models on how long the rain will last; regardless, count on wet roads for your Monday morning commute, even if the rain has stopped. While your first day of the workweek won’t be a washout, we’ll need to watch for off-and-on rain throughout the day.
The onslaught of moisture continues into our Tuesday, although models are suggesting most of the rain will miss the Charlotte area to the south. A strong cold front arrives by Wednesday morning, bringing another round of showers – and possibly a few storms – late Tuesday night. While the overall severe threat is minimal, a few heavy cells could bring isolated lightning, torrential rain, and gusty winds to the Metro early Wednesday morning. Most communities from the High Country down to the Sandhills will see 1-2″ of rain between Monday morning and Wednesday morning. Drier air behind the front will allow for some sunshine to return by our Hump Day afternoon, but stiff winds out of the northwest will plunge temperatures back into the teens, 20s, and 30s across the board as we wake up Thursday morning.
