Man Killed In Caldwell County Deputy Involved Shooting Identified

UPDATE:  The man killed in a Caldwell County deputy involved shooting has been identified as 75-year-old Donald Marcus Smith.

According to the State Bureau of Investigation, Caldwell County Sheriff deputies responded to a residence on Kane Circle in regards to a subject who said he had a handgun and made suicidal statements to sheriff’s dispatchers.

Arriving deputies made contact with Smith from a distance and attempted to de-escalate the situation.  After several minutes, Smith raised his handgun and fired a shot.

One of the officers seeing Smith raise his weapon, fired two shots from his patrol rifle.

The scene was secured, and Smith was found to have an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on his head and two wounds to his torso.

A small caliber handgun was found in Smith’s right hand.

The case is still under investigation and an autopsy is scheduled at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

According to Caldwell County Public Information Officer Louanne Kincaid, the incident occurred in Saw Mills, North Carolina, around 9:30 p.m. near Leta Lane and Kane Circle.

Two deputies were on the scene, but only one fired his service weapon.  Neither officer was injured.

Both deputies were placed on paid administrative leave.

The names of the officers and the deceased have not been released.

The case is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation.
