Victims Identified as Charlotte Reaches 46 Homicides
CHARLOTTE, NC – CMPD is stepping up patrols this summer to try and curb growing violence in the city.
Three people were killed in two separate shootings late Tuesday night.
People in the community are stunned to learn well-known barber David Lindsay is among the victims.
“It’s a surreal moment. You know, considering someone as young as Dave and as gifted as he is,” says No Grease Barber Shop owner Damien Johnson.
29-year-old Lindsay is Charlotte’s 44th homicide victim of the year.
“His clients loved him. When people met him, they remembered that they met him. Cause Dave just had that kind of magnetism,” Johnson says.
Lindsay was found shot to death inside an SUV on Eastwycke Place in East Charlotte around 11:00 Tuesday night.
Murders 45 and 46 happened within the next half-hour.
Police found 29-year-old Jared Chatman and Sanchez McClure, 30 shot dead at the Edge at NoDa apartments on Hilo Drive just before 11:30pm.
Investigators believe those two murders were drug related.
“Our community’s on edge and we’re concerned as well,” says CMPD Chief Kerr Putney.
He says officers will work overtime this summer to combat growing violence.
Grant money will pay for the extra hours.
Officers will be assigned to hotspots across the city with an emphasis on foot and bike patrols.
“The high visibility is really what we’re after after,” Putney says.
Putney says repeat offenders continue to be a problem.. as well as gun thefts.
Police have taken more than 1,000 guns off the streets so far this year.
Nearly 250 of those were stolen.
Detectives often find those guns end up being used to commit crimes.
