CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Essie Mae Washington-Williams made a turn in South Carolina history when she revealed her father’s identity. Longtime U.S. Senator, Strom Thurmond secretly fathered her in 1925. This did not come out until 2003. Thurmond’s granddaughter, Monica Williams-Hudgens is on a mission to continue her family’s legacy.
