NC Marines deploy to Guantanamo Bay

HAVELOCK, N.C. – Marines from North Carolina are helping expand the migrant operations center at Guantanamo Bay’s naval station. The marines deployed on Sunday from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point.

It comes as President Donald Trump says he’s ordering Guantanamo Bay to be prepared to host up to 30,000 migrants arrested in the U.S.

1st Sgt. Johnny Stone tells WCCB, “This is what we train for. At a moment’s notice, we get the call. We were in the field training for something like this and it happened. We stay ready, and were ready to go, and here we are. (I’m) just going to miss my family, didn’t get a lot of time to say bye and that’s what’s going through my head. But I know me and the guys are prepared for this.”

The process of expanding the holding facility is expected to last weeks.
