No Charges In Fatal Crash That Killed 7-Year-old

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Police say no charges will be filed against a driver that caused a wreck that killed a 7-year-old in Matthews.

According to a change.org petition, 7-year-old Lyla Chaudhary, of Stallings, was killed when a vehicle she was a passenger in crashed on June 30th at the corner of Sam Newell Road and Margaret Wallace Road.

Police say after an extensive investigation and consultation with the DA’s office they determined that no charges will be filed.  Another passenger in the vehicle remains hospitalized.

The petition is for a guardrail to be installed.  The creator of the petition says the wreck happened on a particularly dangerous curve and the installation of a guardrail could have prevented such a tragedy.  The guardrail would reportedly help keep motorists from falling down an embankment in the curve.

Police released this statement in reference to the installation of a guardrail:

NCDOT has stated that in the coming months they will be gathering and reviewing information in the area where this crash occurred on Sam Newell Road and make a recommendation as to whether a guardrail is needed.
