Bridge Closes For Street Car Expansion

CHARLOTTE, NC — A major bridge that connects the Elizabeth neighborhood and Plaza Midwood in east Charlotte will soon be demolished, and its replacement won’t be ready for drivers until the spring of 2019.

Crews shut down the Hawthorne Lane bridge Monday to prepare for the Gold Line Street Car. CATS needs to build a new bridge that can support the weight of both vehicles and street cars.

Drivers can use East 7th Street and Central Avenue as alternate routes.
