CMPD Searching For Double Homicide Suspect, One Victim Found In Trunk Of Car At Hospital

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police in north Charlotte are trying to solve a double homicide that happened in a neighborhood on Red Clay Lane, just off West Sugar Creek Road.

Officers reportedly responded to Carolinas Medical Center University in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service.  Upon arrival, officers spoke with a female victim who provided information that there may be possible additional victims at a residence in the 9000 block of Red Clay Lane.

North Division officers responded to this location and located a female victim suffering from trauma.  The victim, Jacquline Gordon-White, was pronounced deceased on scene.

Additional information was gathered by investigators and led them to believe that a male victim was missing from the residence.

A short time later, a male victim was located deceased in the trunk of the vehicle driven to the hospital by the reporting female victim. Based on this new information detectives are working to identify the male victim but do not believe there are any additional victims or missing persons.

Additional information gathered during the investigation has led detectives in identifying the suspect in this case as Vurnel Smith Jr, who was last believed to be driving a black 2017 Honda CRV with a NC plate of PAS-9116.  Anyone who sees the suspect or suspect vehicle is asked to immediately call 911.

Smith is still pending prosecution from a rape and sex offense case that happened in 2015 in Kannapolis.  Police say Smith broke into the victim’s home where he sexually assaulted the victim.  Police say Smith and the victim were known acquaintances.  He was charged with 1st degree forcible rape and 1st degree forcible sexual offense.
