Man charged in deadly hit-and-run in west Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A 20-year-old man is facing charges after a woman was hit and killed in west Charlotte early Saturday morning.

It happened around 2:15 a.m. on Wilkinson Boulevard near Old Dowd Road. When police arrived, they located 48-year-old Monique Williams lying unresponsive in the roadway. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Williams was attempting to cross Wilkinson Boulevard when she was struck by a white Nissan 350Z that was traveling at a high rate of speed. The Nissan did not stop and fled the scene east towards I-485.

Officers located the vehicle unoccupied on the I-85 north ramp near Scott Futrell Drive. The driver, 20-year-old Jonis Dany Sorto-Lovo, was located and screened for impairment.

Sorto-Lovo has been charged with Death by Vehicle, Hit and Run, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Revoked, and Driving After Consuming Under 21.
