SALISBURY, NC – A mother is facing charges after deputies say her son shot himself with an unsecured gun. The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a call about an injured child at Atrium Health Cabarrus on Tuesday.

Investigator say the four-year-old was at home with his mother, Sara Rennie, when he grabbed an unsecured gun and shot himself in the hand.

Rennie is charged with failure to store a firearm to protect minors and felony child neglect. The 23-year-old was placed in the Rowan County Jail on a $30,000 secured bond.

The child suffered non-life threatening injuries.
