CMPD Launches Gun Safety Program

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has launched a gun safety program intended to reduce the number of reported gun thefts.

More than 1,700 guns have been reported stolen from lawful gun owners who left them in vehicles since 2014.  More than 360 guns have been reported stolen from vehicles so far this year alone.

CMPD has secured 100 vehicle gun safes that the department will distribute to community members who lawfully own a gun. Community members may obtain a safe at CMPD headquarters property window after displaying identification.

Additionally, Hyatt Gun Shop will be offering vehicle gun safes to community members at cost, approximately $23.00 a safe.

Owning a gun comes with responsibility and a big part of it involves safeguarding the weapon.  The CMPD continues to urge the community to lock your vehicles and remove items, especially guns.
