Man Arrested For Having Loaded Handgun In Carry-On Luggage At Charlotte Airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say they arrested a man for having a loaded handgun in his carry-on luggage at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

TSA officers noticed the loaded .45 caliber handgun just after 4pm Wednesday at Checkpoint A while the man’s luggage was passing through the x-ray machine.

The man was charged with carrying a weapon on airport property.  To date, TSA officers have detected 36 firearms at Charlotte Douglas International Airport this year.  TSA found 54 firearms at the airport in 2016.

Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms in checked baggage if they are unloaded, packed in a hard-side case, locked, and packed separately from ammunition. Then the firearm must be taken to the airline check-in counter.

TSA has details on how to properly travel with a firearm on TSA.gov.  Airlines may have additional requirements for traveling with firearms and ammunition so travelers should contact their airline regarding firearm and ammunition carriage policies.
