CMPD: One Killed In West Charlotte Accident, Driver Charge With DWI

UPDATE:  Details have emerged after one person died in an accident on Beatties Ford Road Friday night.

The CMPD says Travis Narada Chappell, 37, has been charged with Driving While Impaired, Driving While License Revoked, Felony Death by Motor Vehicle, Involuntary Manslaughter, Careless-Reckless and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

According to police, officers responded to a disturbance at the Exxon Gas Station located at 2519 Beatties Ford Road at about 10:35 p.m., on August 25, 2017.  Responding officers observed a gold 1999 Ford Taurus, being driven by Chappell, leaving the scene in a reckless manner, at a high rate of speed, with no head lights or tail lamps, traveling south on Beatties Ford Road.

As officers attempted to catch the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop, The Ford Taurus ran two red lights, striking the rear driver’s side of a black Dodge Neon near the intersection of French Street and Beatties Ford Road.  The Ford Taurus continued off the right side of the roadway, striking a brick wall before spinning back into Beatties Ford Road, where it stopped and caught on fire.   The arriving officers used fire extinguishers to put out the fire.

The CMPD says officers were not involved in a pursuit of the vehicle.

Chappell was taken to CMC-Main where he was found to be impaired

Police say Evelyn Elaine Smith, 48, a passenger in the vehicle being driven by Chappell, died at the scene from injuries sustained in the accident.

The driver of the Dodge Neon and her two-year-old daughter were taken to Presbyterian Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The case is still under investigation.
