STATESVILLE, N.C. – A 28-year-old man died after crashing into a tree on Interstate 40 in Iredell County on Saturday afternoon, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
It happened around 5 p.m. on I-40 West near Old Mountain Road at Exit 144.
Ramon Gustavo Navo-Almanza was heading west in a 2005 Volvo S60. Troopers said he traveled off the left side of the road and then the right side before hitting a tree.
Navo-Almanza died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, troopers said.
The preliminary investigation determined that excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash. I-40 was partially closed for approximately two hours while troopers investigated at the scene.
