NEWTON, NC — Catawba County officials say they have confirmed the fourth case of rabies in the county so far this year.
Officials say the case was confirmed after a pet owner found their dog chewing on a dead raccoon in Claremont on October 9th. The raccoon was sent to the NC Public Health Laboratory in Raleigh where it tested positive for the virus.
The owners of the dog had been advised to get a rabies vaccination for their pet within 96 hours of the incident, and then observe the dog for 45 days.
In a release sent out Monday afternoon, Catawba County Animal Services reminds all pet owners to protect their pets by making sure they’re properly vaccinated for rabies.
