Person Shot And Killed By Officers Following Three-County Police Chase

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Officials are investigating a deadly police shooting that happened after a wild chase through three counties.

The incident began just after 7am when authorities attempted to stop a suspect involved in a possible hit and run in Gaston County. Officials say the suspect vehicle had also been reported stolen in North Carolina.

Officials say the subject drove off and a pursuit ensued into York County, South Carolina.  Authorities attempted to stop the suspect vehicle by performing a PIT maneuver but the driver reportedly fired a shot at the Troopers.

Troopers returned fire, according to officials, and the suspect rammed a deputy’s cruiser while fleeing in reverse. A video sent to WCCB by Justus McCranie shows the suspect being pursued by York County deputies following that encounter.

The York County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect exchanged more gunfire with Clover Police after hitting one of their vehicles during the pursuit.

Authorities say the subject continued driving into Cleveland County where they eventually got out of the vehicle and fired shots at Kings Mountain officers while running from the scene.

Officials say officers then shot and killed the subject.  The subject’s name has not been released at this time.

York County officials say no deputies were injured in the pursuit or during the gunfire. A Clover officer was treated for injuries to his arm, but was not injured by gunfire.

As part of routine policy for an officer involved shooting, officials say Master Deputy II Wayne Richardson and Deputy Blaine Addis were placed on paid administrative leave. Clover Lieutenants Frankie Sadler and Logan McGarity were also placed on administrative leave.

SLED has also been called in to investigate the shooting.
