TROUTMAN, N.C.Β β One person died and three others were injured in a three-car collision in Iredell County on Saturday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
It happened around 10:20 p.m. on I-77 North near mile marker 43.Β
Troopers said a Hyundai Santa Cruz and a Dodge Caravan were partially stopped in the left lane due to a previous collision. While stopped, a Toyota Corolla failed to reduce speed and struck the Dodge, causing it to hit the Hyundai and the drivers who were standing outside beside the Dodge, authorities said.
The Toyota driver, 22-year-old Emma Garwood, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger, 18-year-old Shane McCurdy, died at the scene.
The Dodge driver, Donald Bethune, 74, was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The Hyundai driver, Terry Brown, 72, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Impairment is not believed to be a contributing factor in the collision, investigators said.
Garwood has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
