National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado near Columbia, SC

No injuries or deaths were attributed to the tornado, which contained wind speeds up to 95 mph.

CHAPIN, SC – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia, SC, has confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down in Lexington County near Chapin on Monday evening.

The twister contained winds approaching 95 mph and carved a damage path over six miles long before dissipating as it approached I-26. The tornado was 200 yards wide during its peak intensity.

While extensive tree damage was found during the NWS’ survey, no injuries or deaths were attributed to this storm.

The tornado was part of the same system that brought widespread severe weather to the Carolinas on Monday. Multiple severe warnings were issued for the WCCB Charlotte viewing area, but no tornadoes were reported in our 22 counties.
