NC Sen. Thom Tillis announces he will not seek re-election
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Just one day after voting against President Donald Trump’s budget bill, Republican NC Senator Thom Tillis says he is not running for re-election next year. Tillis said he could not support the bill because of potential cuts to Medicaid.
In a statement Sunday, Tillis said leaders willing to embrace bipartisanship and compromise are “becoming an endangered species.”
He spoke on the Senate Floor after his announcement, saying, “Republicans are about to make a mistake on health care and betraying a promise. It is inescapable that this bill, in its current form, will betray the very promise that Donald J. Trump made in the Oval Office or in the Cabinet Room when I was there with Finance, where he said we can go after waste, fraud and abuse on any programs.” Tillis says he looks forward to serving the remaining 18 months on his term.
