Scattered storms Tuesday, drying out into holiday weekend

We won't see much of a cooldown behind today's front, but humidity levels sink slightly heading into July 4th weekend.

The first day of July kicks off the back half of 2025 – and we’ll finally see some changes to the stiflingly hot pattern we’ve been dealing with for the better part of the past two weeks. Monday’s high of 93° in Charlotte marked 12 straight days in the 90s for the Queen City, but that streak is in serious jeopardy as a cold front approaches from the northwest this Tuesday afternoon. A Level 1 (out of 5) risk for severe weather has been posted for much of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area today as scattered gusty storms will fire up along the front as it slices through the Carolinas. While most locations will see some rain over the next 24 hours, the overall severe threat remains low. Highs will approach 90° across the Piedmont and Foothills today, but some fall short thanks to the increasing storm chances and cloud coverage.

A few showers and storms may linger as late as Wednesday afternoon, but a drying trend grabs hold of the Carolinas as we head into the July 4th holiday. Unfortunately, today’s front won’t bring much relief from the heat – Wednesday’s mid-to-upper 80s will be as cool as the Metro gets – but we will see a welcome drop in humidity levels through the weekend. Rain chances also take a tumble between Thursday and Saturday before isolated storm opportunities return next week. Right now, your Independence Day weekend looks hot, sunny, and mainly dry, with highs in the mid-to-lower 90s.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor a region stretching from the northeast Gulf Coast to the Carolinas coastline for tropical development as our incoming front stalls over the Atlantic. The NHC is giving this area a 20% chance of becoming a named storm by the start of next week. The next name on the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season list is Chantal.
