Concerns over CMS funding
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education is reaching out to the U.S. Department of Education over funding concerns.
In a letter, the board says they are “deeply concerned” over the department’s decision to withhold more than $6 billion in federal education grants.
The board says CMS was owed $12 million of that in cash, and planned to use it to support more than 141,000 students across the district.
Local education officials say without that money, classrooms will be understaffed and CMS would have to take on $1 million per month in debt.
