Anson County commissioners hold meeting to discuss future of animal shelter

ANSON COUNTY, NC – Anson County Commissioners started their work week off by discussing the future of animal control and the shelter.

“I’m just really sad about the whole situation,” said Maureen Lett.

Lett is the Anson County Shelter Director. She said the situation started about a week ago. She took issue with the way two county employees treated a dog while using a catch stick.. The two were reassigned which didn’t sit well with Lett so she informed the county she would be quitting.

Her possible resignation created concern in her community.

Lett was told that other county departments would take over responsibilities in her absence.

“That’s not something I didn’t think it was fair because that’s not something they signed up for,” said Lett.

The long-time director with the help of Anson County Animal Shelter Advocates, did their best to clear the shelter. Which ended up being a near success.

For now, Emergency Management is now responsible for Animal Control until the county can figure out a long-term solution. Lett thinks the move could be detrimental to the animals.

Lett says she plans to stay on as director while they navigate the new system. In today’s meeting, commissioners also agreed to create a committee that includes the shelter director, sheriff’s office, and the health department, among others, in hopes that group will find a long term solution.
