Monroe Police Officer returns to work after being shot 3 times in the line of duty

MONROE, N.C. – A Monroe Police Officer who was shot in the line of duty is now back on the job. Officer Madison Sweatt went back to work on Monday. Sweatt was shot three times on May 31st; one bullet went into her shoulder, one went in and out and the third grazed her head.

The shooter, 18-year-old Joshua Sikes, led officers on a chase. Sikes ran into the woods and was shot and killed hours later.

The community says it’s great to see her back on the job. Former Medic EMT Sarah Reash says, “(It’s) very emotional. It’s one of those (things) where you want to hoot and holler and just clap and let loose. It’s just (a) relief.

Monroe Police Officer Morgan Malone says, “I had chills when she got out of the car. I’m so grateful that she’s here. I think we’re all so grateful that she’s here.”

The bullet still lodged in Sweatt’s shoulder is scheduled to be removed on Tuesday.
