Β CHARLOTTE, NC —Β TwoΒ Confederate memorials that were vandalized inΒ Charlotte will be cleaned and restored. Β

TheΒ City ofΒ Charlotte removed a monument nearΒ OldΒ CityΒ Hall inΒ Uptown that was spray-painted with the word “racist” to have it cleaned. Β Mecklenburg County has hired a company to clean a monument at Memorial Stadium that was smeared with concrete.

County Commissioners have yet to decide if that monument will be moved.

Β

“Whatever we decide to do as a board, we need five votes, to make whatever happens that we decide to do will be the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons,” said Commissioner VilmaΒ Leake (D).

Β

The city says it plans to return the monument to its location outsideΒ Old City Hall once it is cleaned. Β It is not clear how long that process will take.
