EAST SPENCER, NC —Β A fugitive wanted for robbing a bank and leading authorities on a chase in our area is back in jail. Β That suspect says he hid from police by crawling under thick vegetation.
61-year-old Randy Asbury faces a number of charges, including robbery, larceny of a vehicle, and a federal warrant for escape.
Asbury robbed a bank in Davidson County at knife point on Tuesday, then led police on a chase to Rowan County.
He crashed a stolen car and ran into the woods off I-85 in East Spencer. Β Asbury hid for more than 24 hours, with officers searching all around him.
“Somewhere he had, during the process, scored some drugs. And he said he wasn’t running so much to get away as just to get the opportunity to use his drugs,” said Davidson County Sheriff DavidΒ Grice.
Β
Police finally caught up with Asbury during a traffic stop in Lexington, North Carolina late Wednesday night.
He told investigators he’s terminally ill with cancer and just wanted to get high.
