Soggy days continue, heat lurks ahead
A cold front reaches the Carolinas by the end of the week, but don't expect any meaningful relief.
Our first morning commute of the week was a messy one, and we can expect more of the same to kick off our Tuesday as a moisture-laden air mass hangs over the Carolinas. While the afternoon looks a bit drier, overcast skies will linger throughout the second day of the workweek. Highs will top out 5-10° below normal once again in the mid-to-lower 80s across the Piedmont and Foothills. Warmer air steadily pumps into the WCCB Charlotte viewing area from the southwest over the next few days as afternoon temperatures around the Metro rise into the 90s by the end of the week; scattered showers and storms will be the only things keeping the mercury in check through Friday.
A cold front approaches the Carolinas from the northwest on Friday, but don’t expect any meaningful relief as a strong ridge of high pressure to our south keeps the cooler air at bay. Highs hover around 90° this weekend as a few isolated storms pop up in the afternoons. The heat likely carries through the first half of next week before the forecast becomes more uncertain.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continues to monitor Tropical Storm Erin in the open Atlantic. Erin is not an immediate threat to any land this Tuesday morning, but we’ll want to keep an eye on the fledgling system as it treks westward. Erin will likely become the first hurricane of the season and may reach major Category 3+ status as it swirls north of the Caribbean this weekend. Erin will turn north at some point; when and where it makes the turn is crucial for the forecast. Models are in decisive agreement that the storm will curve out to sea right now, but any small adjustments in track right now may have major impacts on the forecast. Stay tuned!
