Water main break highlights list of flooding concerns for NW Charlotte home
CHARLOTTE, NC — A nightmare for any homeowner. Looking out to see water spewing from your front yard. Unfortunately,Β for Joey Starnes and her family, it’s the latest of a long list of water problems jeopardizing their home.
“All of a sudden it was kind of like that scene in The Beverly Hillbillies where he’s like, up from the ground came a bubbling oil,” said Starnes after a watermain broke in her front yard.
Except it wasn’t oil, instead muddy water was spewing from Starnes’ yard.
The bubbling mess on her lawn is just the latest water issue she said has plagued her northwest Charlotte home.
“We’re starting to feel like this house that we love so much. Maybe it’s built on an Indian burial ground or something because, you know, and I just feel like every time we turn around, there’s something wrong with the water,” Starnes said of her water problems.
For years,Β Starnes says her home has flooded as a result of creek overflow.
Her home is also where she says much of the water runoff from her neighbors goes. She says it’s gotten worse since a new development with 40+ homes was put in.
Last month, the basement where her disabled mother-in-law lives, flooded.
“If she’s staying down there, there’s the potential of mold and mildew. If water is going to continue to run through there, that means ripping up all those floors, putting all that all back in.
Starnes doesn’t have flood insurance and with thousands of dollars in damage, doesn’t know where to turn.
“We just can’t afford to be paying for things that insurance doesn’t cover, the city doesn’t cover. The developer doesn’t cover,” Starnes said of the costs.
