A chaotic forecast approaches
Tropical trouble moves towards the Carolinas
The much needed rain we have been hoping for has finally entered the WCCB Charlotte viewing area thanks to a slow moving front. Rain will be isolated this afternoon with no washout expected. Showers and a couple of thunderstorms will increase in coverage this evening. A few of these could try to approach severe limits with isolated strong wind gusts. Temperatures today reach the upper 80s for Charlotte, and the low 70s in the High Country. Expect a very tropical air mass as winds from the south bring in the moisture for these showers and storms. The trend has been for this slow moving front to stop all together over the Carolinas. This means rain chances stay in place with rounds of showers being on and off through Saturday in an isolated to scattered nature. Temperatures will drop back to average after Thursday, but the tropical air mass remains in place.
This stalled out front is one headache in the forecast, but a much bigger uncertainty looms…
The tropics have fully awoken, as tropical storm Humberto formed Wednesday evening. Humberto likely becomes a hurricane this weekend, but luckily looks to stay away from the United States. Humberto isn’t the only system in the tropics as Invest 94L has a high chance of developing into Tropical Storm Imelda near the Bahamas. Uncertainty is about as high as it gets with this area of investigation. What’s important at this stage is it *could* impact the Carolinas in some way. This could be in the form of surf, increased rain chances, or even in a more direct way. The timing of this would be early next week should anything come of it.
Rain totals look to be around an inch or so for most over the next 2 days. After that, totals will be highly dependent on what happens in the tropics. Make sure to stick with WCCB over the next week while the WCCB weather team keeps you Weather Wise!
