SBI investigating in custody death following east Charlotte traffic stop

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The SBI is investigating an in-custody death after a man detained by CMPD died following a medical episode in the back of a police vehicle.

On Friday, September 26th shortly after 3:30am, officers conducted a traffic stop on Eastway Drive due to a vehicle not having a license plate, according to a news release.

Officers say they developed probable cause to search the vehicle. The driver was removed from the vehicle and secured in a rear passenger area of a police patrol vehicle while officers conducted the search, according to CMPD.

CMPD says the driver began experiencing a medical episode while in the patrol vehicle. MEDIC was called to the scene and they transported the driver to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release.

CMPD says the death is being investigated as an in custody death due to the driver being detained.

Police say illegal narcotics were found inside the vehicle during the search.

Officials have not released the identity of the man who died.
