CMPD: Driver charged after pedestrian in crosswalk hit and killed in southwest Charlotte

The information below is from a CMPD news release.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in the Steele Creek Division.

On Monday, Oct. 6, at approximately 8:19 a.m., officers responded to the 9700 block of Shopton Rd. West in reference to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim, Hanh Hoang, 76, lying in the roadway unresponsive. Officers also located a Toyota Camry and its driver, Alma Monica Velasquez, 41, who remained on scene.

MEDIC arrived on scene and transported Hoang to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Hoang was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Detectives with CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to the scene to conduct their investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Mr. Hoang was crossing Shopton Road in a marked crosswalk when he was struck by the Toyota.

Impairment is not a suspected factor for Ms. Velasquez nor Mr. Hoang. Speed does not appear to be a contributing factor for the collision.

Ms. Velasquez is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle for failing to yield the right of way for a pedestrian.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD’s Public Affairs Division. Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone with information concerning the crash, should contact Detective D. Leung at 704-432-2169 ext. 6.
